SML has introduced its latest turret winder model, the W1300, developed to enhance high-volume cast film production by enabling the processing of jumbo rolls with a mechanical diameter of up to 1,500 mm.
Designed for CPP, CPE, mono-oriented, and barrier films, the W1300 operates at winding speeds up to 450 m/min and handles end film widths ranging from 2,400 mm to 3,900 mm. “Our new W1300 turret winder was designed for the winding of CPP, CPE, mono-oriented and barrier films of absolute premium quality,” said Alexander Bruckmüller, Product Manager at SML.
The ability to produce larger rolls significantly boosts downstream efficiency. SML notes that a 1,200 mm roll of 25 µm film holds 45,000 running meters, whereas a 1,500 mm roll contains 70,000 meters—an increase of more than 50%. This allows for longer production runs and reduced changeovers in subsequent processes like printing and metallising.
The winder supports both gap and contact winding modes. A satellite roller is used before the film meets the contact roller to control air intake and roll hardness. The system is compatible with winding both with and without shafts and offers optional post-cooling via a prepared inlet section.
For roll changes, auxiliary contact rollers maintain film quality to the final layer. Two cross-cutting units—a twisting knife for thin films and a flying knife for thicker, oriented films—are available.
The W1300 is also retrofit-friendly, with its own control system and electrics, making it suitable for integration into existing third-party cast film lines.
